Your Business Is Growing. Are Your Controls Keeping Up?

Growth is the goal of most businesses. It also brings more transactions, more people, more systems, and more responsibilities. Processes that worked when the business was smaller can become difficult to control as operations expand.
What protected you at the start may not protect you as you scale. Your controls need to grow with your business.
Five signs your controls are falling behind

1. More transactions mean more room for error
A process that handled 20 transactions may not handle 200. Higher volumes increase the risk of recording errors, duplicate transactions, missed approvals, and unreconciled balances. Growth requires processes that can scale.
2. Too much control stays with one person
As a business grows, financial responsibilities should be divided. When one person handles approvals, payments, recording, and reconciliation, mistakes or irregularities can go unnoticed. Separating these responsibilities strengthens accountability.

3. System access does not grow with the team
New employees join, roles change, and people leave, but access permissions are often not updated to match. Outdated or excessive access to financial systems and sensitive information exposes the business to unnecessary risk. Give the right access to the right people, and review it regularly.
4. Approvals become too informal
As activity increases, chat messages and verbal approvals can start to replace documented processes. Without clear authorization procedures, accountability becomes harder to establish. Define who can approve what, and up to what amount.
5. Financial review does not keep up
Receiving financial reports is not the same as reviewing them. As the business grows, management should regularly monitor unusual transactions, budget variances, cash flow trends, outstanding receivables, and key financial indicators. Good reporting informs you; good review helps you act.
