Financial Ratios Every Business Owner Should Know

Your financial statements show what happened. Financial ratios help you understand what it means.
Revenue, profit, and asset figures are useful on their own, but they become far more informative when compared with each other. Ratios turn those comparisons into a few clear measures of profitability, liquidity, debt, and efficiency, so you can see patterns the raw numbers hide.

1. Is your business truly profitable?
Profitability ratios measure how effectively your business turns revenue into profit.
Gross profit margin shows how much of each peso of revenue remains after direct costs.
Net profit margin shows how much remains after all expenses.
A business with rising sales but shrinking margins may be working harder for less. Revenue alone does not define business success.
2. Can you cover what you owe?
Liquidity ratios measure whether the business can meet its short-term obligations.
Current ratio compares current assets with current liabilities.
Quick ratio applies the same test but excludes inventory, since stock cannot always be converted to cash quickly.
A weak liquidity position can strain a business even when it is profitable.
3. How much does your business rely on debt?
Leverage ratios show how the business finances its operations and growth.
Debt-to-equity ratio compares total liabilities with owners’ equity.
Too much debt increases financial risk, while well-planned borrowing can support growth. The key is finding the right balance.
4. How well are your resources working?
Efficiency ratios measure how well the business manages its assets and operations.
Receivables turnover shows how quickly customers pay.
Inventory turnover shows how quickly stock moves.
Growth is stronger when resources work efficiently.

Never look at one ratio alone
A single ratio rarely tells the whole story. For meaningful insight, compare your ratios over time, against your business targets, with relevant industry benchmarks, and alongside other financial indicators. A trend tells you far more than one number from one period.
